La escritura  cuneiforme estuvo en uso más de treinta siglos y sufrió a lo largo de este tiempo una notable evolución, desde .3400 a.C. hasta el siglo I a.C.

El sistema consiste en una combinación de consonantes  logofonéticas y signos   alfabéticos  y silábico.

La escritura cuneiforme sufrió notables variaciones a lo largo de los tres milenios que se usó.
