Brush fires around the Getty Center in Los Angeles were contained late Wednesday and were moving away from the museum, firefighters said.

The Getty, home to thousands of priceless artifacts and works of art, was threatened by a brush fire in the Santa Monica mountains.

The world-famous museum evacuated its 800 employees and sent visitors home on Wednesday as smoke hovered over the area from brush burning nearby.

The museum’s ventilation systems were shut down to prevent smoke from damaging the priceless artwork, Getty Center spokesman Ron Hartwig said.

“The Getty Center was built with a great deal of safeguard,” he said. “You can never be overly confident, but we’re certainly prepared to handle fires in this area.”

The museum complex is mounting exhibitions of the works of Paul Outerbridge and Jo Ann Callis as well as its collection of European paintings, manuscripts, decorative arts and Greek and Roman antiquities.

Nearby Mount St. Mary’s College also has been evacuated, as the fire is about a mile away.

About 150 firefighters are battling the blaze in dense brush above Sunset Boulevard.

A large brush fire also burned through this area last year, but did not damage any structures.

Parts of Santa Barbara, including residential areas, were destroyed by out-of-control wildfires in California in May.
